ISCA 50th World Championship Postponed

update from the latest copy of the Sunfish class newsletter, the Windward Leg:

The 2020 ISCA World Championship sponsored by Maclaren, scheduled for October to be held in Sarasota, FL, USA, has been postponed until the spring of 2021. The resolution of the COVID-19 pandemic that the Class was hoping for has yet to materialize and restrictions on international travel in place are unlikely to change in time. As such, ISCA President Rich Chapman (USA) and ISCA Vice President Guillermo Cappelleti (Peru), in conjunction with the host Sarasota Sailing Squadron, recommended to the ISCA World Council that the Championship be postponed. This recommendation was approved unanimously by 16 members of the World Council, and Sarasota Sailing Squadron has agreed to host the 50thSunfish Worlds during either late April or May 2021. The committee previously organizing the 2021 Worlds for Lake Garda, Italy, has agreed to delay their event until 2022.

“Although this was a difficult decision to make, it was clearly the right action to take. We are looking at our 50th World Championship to be a very special event and that will require lead times and detailed planning that are impossible at this time. Fortunately, our sponsor, Maclaren, has agreed to carry over to 2021 and LaserPerformance again will provide boats for the Championship,” explained Rich Chapman.

Cindy Clifton, event chairman for the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, noted, “We were looking forward to hosting the 50th Sunfish Worlds this October, but the pandemic-related barriers facing all regattas in today’s environment made this an easy decision to make. We look forward to hosting the 50th Sunfish Worlds next spring at The Squadron.”

august 2014 sunfish midwest schedule

there are (8) [holy smokes!] upcoming Sunfish races in the Midwest Region during the month of August.  there are 4 different races happening on the weekend of August 23rd & 24th!  busy times wrapping up the summer.

Saturday, August 9th – Douglas Lake Regatta (Open)

this regatta is put together by the Douglas Lake Sunfish Fleet 700, and the event will be held on Douglas Lake in the northern part of Michigan’s lower peninsula (Google map).

Beautiful, large inland lake.  Good sized racing fleet.  Lots of room for launching and recovery.

Sunday, August 10th – Lake Charlevoix Open Regatta (Open)

this is fairly close to the race the previous day on Douglas Lake, so it’d be a great way to get 2 races in in the same general area.  Lake Charlevoix (“3rd largest inland lake in Michigan!”) is beautiful – I spent several vacations up there with my best friend back in the ol’ high school days, although back then we were cruising around on jet-skis.  the event is hosted by the Charlevoix Yacht Club, and racing will be held at the northwest end of the lake.  you can find the notice of race here (.pdf file).

Sunday, August 10th – Fun Sunfish Regatta (Open)

the printed schedule I got shows this as the 11th (Monday), but these are usually held on Sundays… so let’s just call it the 10th of August.  this is the same day as the Charlevoix Open above, but will be down in Ohio.  this race will be held at Kiser Lake State Park in Ohio (map of state park here, .pdf file) and is hosted by the Kiser Lake Sailing Club.  the lake is popular for sailing as motorboats are not allowed on the lake.

the 1st regional championship for the Midwest Region will be held at Wolf Lake Yacht Club near Jackson, Michigan.  the event also celebrates the 75th anniversary of the yacht club! the NOR can be found here (.pdf file).

Sunday, August 24th – Lake Bluff Regatta (J Sheppard Memorial Regatta)

this event will be held at Lake Bluff Yacht Club. additional information can be found at their Facebook page and the NOR (.pdf file).

located in Lake Bluff, Illinois along the shore of Lake Michigan north of Chicago.  This provides an excellent place to enjoy sailing and learn in many varied sailing conditions.

Sunday, August 24th – auGusto (Open)

this is the same day as the Midwest Sunfish Regional above.  this race is hosted by the Hueston Sailing Association (map to lake here):

Racing 1:30pm to 4:00pm – no fees, no trophies, just fun!

Sunday, August 24th – Fun Sunfish Regatta (Open)

same venue and general info as the Fun Sunfish Regatta on August 10th, see above for more details.

Saturday, Aug 30th to Sunday, Aug 31th – GDSC Open

the Greater Detroit Sunfish Club (GDSC) is back up at Tawas Bay on Lake Huron, and is their Labor Day regatta (held a weekend early!).

september 2013 sunfish midwest schedule

there are (3) Sunfish races in the Midwest Region during the month of September.

Saturday, August 31st and Sunday, Sept 1st – GDSC Open Regatta – Labor Day

the Greater Detroit Sunfish Club (GDSC) (also check out their Yahoo Group, it’s sometimes a bit more up-to-date) hosts an annual camping trip with Sunfish racing to be held over Labor Day weekend.  they are repeating things from last year, with the event being held at Tawas Bay, Michigan, with racing to be held on Tawas Bay which is part of  Lake Huron.  many from the group will be camping at the Tawas Point State Park, but the group will be launching their sailboats from the public ramp next to Timberlane Resorts, where some of the group is also staying.

Lake Huron at Tawas Bay

my family camped at that state park a few summers ago – it is a pretty nice park, and a absolutely beautiful area, but sailing is not really feasible from the state park and campground area, as the water is very shallow for several hundred and up to a few thousand feet off the shoreline.  I also sailed on Tawas Bay that weekend, launching from the same ramp the GDSC will be using.

Saturday, Sept 14th and Sunday, Sept 15th – Midwest Sunfish Regional Championship #3

this event will be held at Devils Lake Yacht Club in Manitou Beach, Michigan.  it is the 70th annual “Bruce Goldsmith Memorial Regatta“, and typically includes 2 fleets – Sunfish and Lightnings.  this is the event I was able to attend as a spectator (and photographer) in 2009.

Saturday, Sept 21st and Sunday, Sept 22nd – Clark Lake Fall Regatta

this 2-day event will be held by Clark Lake Yacht Club in Clark Lake, Michigan.  a couple things from the notice of race:

Note:  5 boats minimum required for individual start –3 boats minimum for a fleet! Rebels, Interlakes, Sunfish, Wayfarers, Buccaneers, and Snipes!

sounds like a great time!  the official notice of race can be found here (.pdf file).

august 2013 sunfish midwest schedule

there are 6 upcoming Sunfish races in the Midwest Region during the month of August.

Sunday, August 11th – Fun Sunfish Regatta (Open)

this race will be held at Kiser Lake State Park in Ohio (map of state park here, .pdf file) and is hosted by the Kiser Lake Sailing Club.  the lake is popular for sailing as motorboats are not allowed on the lake.

…2pm start, open to all, no fees, there are trophies, very informal, short course, numerous starts…

Saturday, August 17th – Scowfish Regatta (Open)

this is a regatta for both Sunfish and MC Scow sailboats.  it will be the 8th annual regatta for the MC Scows, and the 12th annual regatta for the Sunfish.  the event is being held at Portage Lake Yacht Club in Pinckney, Michigan. more information can be found here.

Saturday & Sunday, August 24th & 25th – Midwest Sunfish Regional #2

this is the 2nd Midwest Regional, and is being held on Lake Michigan by Lake Bluff Yacht Club.

Sunday, August 25th – Just For Fun #3 (Open)

the Hueston Sailing Association (map to lake here) already hosted Just for Fun #1 (May) and Just for Fun #2 (July).  this is their 3rd race in the Just for Fun series.  once again:

Racing 1:30pm to 4:00pm – no fees, no trophies, just fun!

Sunday, August 25th – Fun Sunfish Regatta (Open)

this is the same day as the Just for Fun #3 above, and is the same racing venue as the Fun Sunfish Regatta on August 11th (see above for information).

Saturday, August 31st & Sunday, September 1st – GDSC Open – Labor Day Regatta

the Greater Detroit Sunfish Club (GDSC) (also check out their Yahoo Group, it’s sometimes a bit more up-to-date) hosts an annual camping trip with Sunfish racing to be held over Labor Day weekend.  they are repeating things from last year, with the event being held at Tawas Bay, Michigan, with racing to be held on Tawas Bay which is part of  Lake Huron.  many from the group will be camping at the Tawas Point State Park, but the group will be launching their sailboats from the public ramp next to Timberlane Resorts, where some of the group is also staying.

2013 Michigan Open/Midwest Regional Championship #1

this weekend, Saturday, June 1-2, 2013 is the Sunfish Regional Championship #1 for the Midwest Region.  the event is being hosted this year by the Gull Lake Sunfish Fleet #704 on Gull Lake, Michigan.

Gull Lake Sunfish Fleet

We’re sailing out of Gull Lake Yacht Club this year, so bring the family!  There’s a beach, a swim area, a kids play area with swings, slide and more, ping pong table, and we’ve included a list of nearby attractions for those who choose not to sail.  Guests may set up an account at the club for the weekend for snack bar and Boat Bar purchases.

the official Notice of Race (NOR) can be found here (.pdf file).  more information can be found at the Gull Lake Sunfish Fleet #704 Facebook page.

sunfish worlds 2012

the 2012 Sunfish Youth Worlds & Open Worlds events start in just a few days, this year in St Petersburg, Florida.  the event is being hosted by the St Petersburg Yacht Club.

the Youth Worlds will take place October 11th to 14th (racing will start the 12th). the Open Worlds will take place October 13th to 20th (racing the 15th to the 19th).

for an absolutely phenomenal collection of things related to the Sunfish Worlds (both the upcoming 2012 event as well as past events), you should really check out and bookmark http://www.sunfishworlds.org/

they have done a great job of compiling past records of sailors who will be participating in this year’s event, as well as cataloging pictures from older events.  this year, they’ve also rolled out a mobile version of their website!
