Can my 11 year old , 97 lb grandson learn to sail on a Sunfish? Lfoley52@optonline.net

Linda, i think it would be an ok place to start. You might start him out in lighter winds. And have him practice capsize recovery, to see if he can flip the boat back over by himself.

Your photos bring back fantastic memories of times my dad spent teaching me to sail when I was a girl 🙂 We had many grand adventures aboard a Sunfish. ❤ your blog!

Have you ever checked “Alpa Skip”? It’s an Italian clone of Sunfish, quite similar to Super Purpose. I’m trying to put the attension of italian sailors on this boat. Your blog it’s very interesting for me

It’s a pleasure! Alpa was an iconic shipyard in Italian yachting history. Under the leadership of Danilo Cattadori has build beautiful yachts but also great dinghies such as Alpa 550, Alpa S. They build also a Sunfish clone named Alpa Skip that was robust but lighter than sunfish. It is a very good boat, so good that even if the sunfish class is quite strong in Italy, Alpa Skip is today still more common. Alpa skip is the tipycal 80′ and 90′ sailing school or family boat. Cheaper than Sunfish. Easyer than Laser. Actually “Skip” is still produced by Paiardi shipyard (www.paiardi.com) that holds Alpa’s moulds.
Information are not so common, but you can refer to Alpa Historical Club

One question, being in USA, have you ever managed to add to you collection an old Alcort Sailfish? JFK used sail with it!!

thanks for the video – is that you sailing it? looks quite similar to a Sunfish.
I’ve never sailed or owned a Sailfish, but am familiar with them – and yes, JFK had great passion for sailing!
