Van Gogh: The Stevedores in Arles

GOGH, Vincent van Los descargadores en Arles, 1888_557 (1965.7)

The heart of man is very much like the sea, it has its storms, it has its tides and in its depths it has its pearls too ~ Vincent van Gogh

it’s a Hobie affair

something is amiss.

I think that maybe, just maybe, the skipper of Sunfish 3929 is having a bad influence on me.

he keeps cheating on 3929 with a big ol’ Flying Scot.

and now I’ve gone and sailed a a non-Sunfish sailboat.

that’s right: I sailed a Hobie Wave.

I just let the boat do the work.

I haven’t even sailed my Sunfish a single time this year.  we’ve been too busy, yadda, yadda, yadda (I’m good at making excuses…).

it was my first time on a boat with 2 hulls.  first time on a sailboat that wasn’t a Sunfish (or smaller).

and I liked it.

the water was warm, winds were decent, the location was spectacularly beautiful – perfect conditions to sail comfortably, but not risk tipping the Hobie, particularly since I had guests!

that’s right: 3 girls (women, really… my wife and 2 of my friends’ wives) fit more than comfortably with me on the Hobie.  I can’t say that could ever happen on my Sunfish.  well, you could try it, but it would be quite cramped, and make sailing difficult!

I could go into more detail about the other Hobie that (tried?) sailing at the same time as us, but that’s another story for another day.

should my Sunfish be jealous?

photo challenge: rare

this may be somewhat of a stretch, but the photo challenge is subject to interpretation… this week’s subject is “rare”.

I’ve chosen a highlight a photo I took of the sunrise over the ocean in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Nikon D70, f/6.3, 1/60 sec

most of my life has been spent in Michigan and I’ve seen hundreds of amazing sunsets on Lake Michigan – and granted you can see the sunrise over Lake Huron, I’m not sure it would compare to watching the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean.  so, for me, a sunrise over water is a pretty rare occasion.

how’s that for Jersey fresh, Baydog?

Van Gogh: Fishing Boats at Sea

I’ve always had a fondness for Van Gogh’s paintings. he created this oil on canvas painting in 1888 at Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France.

sailing clowns

I stumbled on these unique paintings a couple days ago.  the artist Sean Landers has created a collection called “Around the World Alone”, where he depicts a solo clown, sailing on the ocean.

clown 01Around the World Alone (Lord of the Seas), 2011
Oil on linen, 78 x 126 inches
clown 02Around the World Alone (Waxing Moon Torpor), 2011
Oil on linen, 32 x 28 inches

for more details and additional paintings – see the full collection at Petzel Gallery.

mast walk: like a BOSS

Alex Thomson walks up the mast of his HUGO BOSS — all 30 meters! and then dives off it into the ocean. very very cool.
