launching a Sunfish in heavy waves [video]

this is a cool video showing the difficulties in launching a Sunfish in the strong winds and heavy wave conditions at Lewes, Delaware earlier this month at the 2013 Sunfish Worlds.  the wind and waves were severe enough that the racers were only able to complete 5 races during the several days of racing.

That was wild. I’ve raced in heavy weather, but never in anything half as bad as that.

Imagine that…..heavy air and waves coming from Jersey!

Looks like fun. Wonder how they looked coming into the beach?
Dropping the sail before you come in could be problematic too. I guess you shouldn’t blast right up either, you might wind up in the parking lot!

What’s the right thing to do?

Get to shore without drowning? I’m not sure. If you turn up perpendicular to the beach, the waves will just flip you. If you surf straight in dead downwind, you most likely crash hard at the wave breaks. Maybe Tillerman knows the best option.
