do any of my readers have any idea what this class or type of sailboat could be? a friend saw the picture hanging on the wall at a doctor’s office, and we were both curious what it could be.
it seems to be a fairly short boat to be carrying 9 crew members! and it looks like at least the forward 7 crew members are balancing out over the windward edge of the boat on some type of pole.
It’s a Caribbean Seven Pole Double-ended Sailing Canoe.

No I couldn’t find anything. But I bet it is some design sailed by the locals on some little island somewhere and never seen anywhere else. Where did the doctor go on his vacation last year?

I “borrowed” your photo for my blog and someone called Pelle got it almost right away! I wonder if he has the same answer as Peter?

I saw you had posted that – your readership is obviously more varied and widespread than mine! that is the same answer Peter came up with.

It’s a Gommier from Martinique.

Undoubtedly the oldest boating material in the Caribbean and particularly in St. Lucia and Martinique, the Gommier, dug out from the tree which gives it its name, has a long and rich history. The canoes were already being used by traditional Arawaks and Caribs centuries ago, when they travelled from the Amazonia plains to inhabit the Eastern Antilles, before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
Until the 1950’s the Gommier canoes were quite evident in Martinique’s and St. Lucia’s economic, social and cultural life. It was prevalent for fishing, transporting goods, mail and even corpses. It was while returning from fishing that crews often challenged each other, resulting in the first sailing canoe race.
