Alcort Catfish sailboat vintage ads

here’s another odd sailboat that was produced for a while by Alcort, in addition to their Sailfish and Sunfish lines.  it looks like the date shown on this first picture is 1965.  that is about how old I figure my green Sunfish is, so there’s a good chance that someone has one of these in their garage or at a cottage on a lake and might even still be using it.

Wayne (he’s since passed away) posted about this little sailboat on the Sunfish Forum:

Pre-dates the production HobieCat. Designed by George W. Patterson, built and sold by Alcort, Inc. from about 1964 to 1969 at which time Alcort sold its whole sailboat business to AMF. AMF dropped the Catfish in favor of the more Hobie-like Trac Cat (Windrush) licensed from an Austrailian builder.

thanks again to blackbelair for sharing these vintage ads with me.

Short story- my Dad went out to buy a Sunfish for his daughter and came back with a used Catfish, one of only a couple i I ever saw in our area. I loved it, the speed, hiking out, as the windward hull left the water. I.ve sailed ever since, now in a Catalina 380, but will always have fond memories of the Catfish.

We bought this Catfish in 1966 and my husband raced it on small lakes in the Detroit MI area. He rigged a pulley so the Catfish was stored above the car in the garage. It then was stored in my daughter’s garage on the trailer and used a few times. It now is at a cottage on a small lake in MI and again stored inside a large shed. The sail had a tiny hole and is repaired and few seams touched up and it’s ready to go again. It is still in perfect condition and will be enjoyed for years to come.

I have a Catfish that my father bought in the 60’s when they first came out. There were 3 on our lake in southwestern Mass. Now only mine is left. It has an all white hull (hull no.CF112) and the original all white sail.
We sail it occasionally when the wind is stiff enough. Great fun!
