and now for something completely different…
earlier this spring I bought a new mountain bike, and have been trying to add that in to my life’s rotation. the bike trails are very easy to get to from our house, and the loop around the nearby lake is a short 4-mile route. I usually ride one or two loops – nothing crazy. most of the route is on paved bike trails or large shoulders along the road, but there is a part that you can detour off into a gravel drive that winds through the woods, with several small footpaths that wander even further into, and along, the woods.
a few nights ago, I rode a loop around the lake with my 13-yr old son, and when we stopped at home, he went back inside, I grabbed my GoPro camera and took off for another loop. it was getting into the lower light of evening, and the video I captured on the trails in the woods was pretty wild. enjoy.
and now for something completely different (but related to my line of work in structural engineering & construction):
this is an amazing time-lapse video created by an architectural photographer of several Wolff tower cranes working on construction at Berlin’s Leipziger Platz.
load it up in HD and watch full screen – it is very well done.
this is an incredibly well done video showing off sailing in a Minifish, which is a smaller cousin to the Sunfish sailboat.
load it up in full HD and enjoy this beauty in full screen.

here is a short teaser trailer about a summer adventure two women took on Lake Michigan. the two of them paddled and sailed over 1200 miles on Lake Michigan over 93 days in the summer. they added a Sunfish sail to their hand-made dugout canoe.
This summer my friend, Amy, and I circumnavigated Lake Michigan… Everyone dreams of an adventurous life. We took off out the back door running; exploring on our own terms, by our own means. This is a short teaser of our journey.
they also have a blog about it: Lake Michigan in a Dugout
I found their blog from one of the weekly “Rhumbline” emails from Laser Performance United.
here is a pretty cool video of a Sunfish sailing regatta on New Year’s Day hosted by the Edgewood Yacht Club in Narragansett Bay, RI.
towards the very end of the video, the sailor is sailing incredibly fast on a downwind leg – the Sunfish is planing and just flying across the water.
